Well, this fellow certainly needs no introduction. And if you haven’t heard about this fellow, then all you need to know is that for over fifty years, Johnny Cash (look here or here) (Feb 26th, 1932 – Sept 12th, 2003) was country music.
Here, we’ve got a couple of songs from his earlier years. Bear Family Records has done the world a favor by collecting pretty much everything he recorded from 1954-1969 in three sets of 5-6 cd boxsets. While making my way through the second set, I was amused to hear Johnny Cash singing a couple of songs in German, so I thought I’d post them (along with a couple other numbers) for y’all to hear.

So, I’ve got a couple of friends coming into town this weekend and they wanted to go to a steakhouse. I know, I’ve got a big cross to carry, but I sucked it up and made some reservations to this steakhouse where the chef bought his own bull to sire all the beef for the restaurant. And if that’s not rediculous enough, they constructed a “salt cave” in the basement, in order to dry age the meat, where the walls are lined with Himalayan salt. Hmmmm, scrumdiliumptious I’m gonna be wearing my fat pants after this weekend.

Thank you so much for posting these! I’m a Southern-born boy now working on an M.A. in German Studies. As a huge Johnny Cash fan, I’ve been looking for these in vain since learning a few years ago that Cash had recorded songs “auf Deutsch.”
I’m grateful to have happened upon them today. Though the Man in Black’s pronunciation leaves a little to be desired, the fact that he recorded these at all is impressive. In any case, you’ve made my weekend.
P.S. I understand that he also recorded a version of “Walk the Line” in German, call “Wer kennt den Weg”. If you have it, would you mind posting it, or consider sending it to me directly? I offer eternal gratitude (and a generation of German language students who will get to hear Johnny in the classroom. . .)?
