From Yeti Vol 2
This is a follow up to Mondays post about Carissa’s Wierd (look here). I was having trouble remembering what magazine the cd compilation came from, but my friend s was able to point me in the right direction (thanks!!).
The magazine, Yeti, is huge and packed to the gills with writings about art and music and includes a cd compilation. The whole package is pretty incredible and has provided me with countless hours of edutainment. Yeti is/was published by Mr. Mike McGonigal and is based out of Seattle, WA and had some sort of connection to a non-profit organisation called Nobrow. Unfortunately, the non-profit is no longer, but Mike McGonigal has an mp3 blog called ‘Buked & Scorned which informs us that (despite the bold proclamation in Yeti 2 that this magazine is published 3 times a year) a new issue of Yeti 3 is due out soon, only 2-3 years after Yeti 2! But, if previous manifestations of this magazine are any indication, the wait will be worth it.
Writing this post, I’ve been reveling in the happenstances that lead you to musical discoveries. For the most part, I don’t listen to magazine cd compilations. I’m not sure why that is, but I don’t. But 2 years ago, I lent this magazine to s, who did listen to the comp and told me about a couple of great tracks on there. But it wasn’t until 1 year ago that I bought and really loved the Carissa’s Wierd album. And it’s only just now that I’m really listening to the cd comp and realizing how great it is, 2 years after the fact. Strange.
At any rate, on to the music. We’ve got the great Sam Bean, masquerading as Iron & Wine, providing covers of Stereolab and The Flaming Lips songs. We’ve got Carissa’s Weird back with a cover of Red Red Meat. And last but not least we’ve got The Frames with a cover of Palace Music.
—–+—–
I also found out from reading ‘Buked And Scorned that Sad Robot Records, the label that released the last two Carissa’s Weird albums, is no longer in existence. That’s too bad.

I picked up Yeti Vol. 1 at a yard sale a couple years ago… Paid 25cents.. 50 mebbie.. totally worth it…I don’t remember if it had a tracklisting, so i didn’t know who the bands were until i digitized it earlier this year… much to my surprise, several great bands on it that i’ve discovered elsewhere…go, fightin’ yeti!

Hello-
Can’t wait to get my hands on Yeti 3 (wish he had a web site, though).
One correction, however: Sad Robot Records is still very much a label, as far as I know, although Mr. McGonigal is longer involved. Their real site is down, but they do have the obligatory myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/sadrobotrecords), and new stuff from Hypatia Lake is coming.
