Songs About Leaving

I first heard about this band from a friend of mine. I had lent her this zine with a companion cd. She gave it back to me a couple weeks later talking on and on about this band called Carissa’s Wierd that she had heard on the cd. She loved the one song she heard but was having trouble tracking their stuff down. I listened to the song that she talked about and wasn’t as thrilled about it. I enjoyed it but didn’t find myself as drawn to it. A couple of years later though, I was at the local record store looking for something new to listen to when I saw this album sitting in the racks. The name sounded familiar and I remembered that my friend was a huge fan of theirs. So I took a chance and plunked down some money for the album. For some reason this time, from the first song, I was blown away.

Carissa’s Wierd compose and play music for rainy days. They, Jenn and Mat, first got together all the way back in 1994. Armed with a four track, some guitars and their wistful vocals, they laid down some of the most beautifully sad music out there. Fast forward a number of years to 2002 and they’ve gotten a little more sophisticated, with strings and piano added to the mix.

Unfortunately they’re no longer together, deciding to take an indefinite hiatus in 2003. And while this album and the follow up, I Before E are still readily available, their first two albums released on their now defunct Brown Records are scarce and valuable.

    hi cb–
funny, that comp cd also has iron & wine on it. I remember trying to find more of his stuff, too, but with no luck at the time. little did I know that some years later I could hear more on m&ms commercials. that was the yeti zine, right?
I still like carissa’s wierd well enough, but it’s wierd to think that I talked “on and on” about ‘em. a few months ago, I sold my copy of their first album–my paltry grad school budget is to blame.
