One Year Past
* Bedhead: Haywire (6.5 mb) | Bedside Table (6.5 mb) | Powder (9.5 mb)
From WhatFunLifeWas : Trance Syndicate Records : TR21

Bedhead are in a three way tie as my favorite band in the whole wide world. This band has a sound that slays me everytime I listen to them. It’s an incredible, ego-less sound, with everyone really working towards the betterment of the whole. The three guitar players sound like one guitar, the drummer never adds anything superfluous and the bassist is absolutely rock solid.
All I can say about Bedhead is that they are the sole band with whom I am familiar who create music that is both beautiful and perfect. Perfect in the sense that it isn’t beautiful for the sheer sake of it; the melodies don’t exist for the mere purpose of being hooks, the crescendos don’t happen just because they can — the whole of Bedhead’s music is artless in this way, and they seem to be directed by a sweeping yet controlled, profound but modest emotional intent. Many powerful and touchy subjects (y’know: loss, depression, the ones that are turned inside out by scenery-chewing emo-rockers the world over) are essayed briefly and eloquently, and the way the band plays together is sophisticated and magical. I would probably be indignant about people overlooking them and continually lumping them in with their inferiors if I wasn’t so continually amazed that music like this exists in the first place. Like I said: perfect, and that doesn’t come along often.

I’ve tried writing this post a number of times over the past year. But probably because this band means so much to me, I could never really get my mind to say what I really wanted to say. So, I’ll just leave you with these songs.

I just realized that I’ve been doing this blog for one year.

. . . and doing a damn fine blogging job at that. “What Fun Life Was” has been with me over ten years already, and I still get floored by it.
Years later, while in New Orleans to see Macha play a radio conference, I was outside the Mermaid Lounge playing basketball when the lead singer starts talking to this random guy taking three pointers and missing them with much aplomb, who says he’s Bedhead’s road manager . . . and then maybe a year later we had “Macha Loved Bedhead” come to fruition.
Did you ever hear that album? You have to, it’s amazing. . .
Take care, be well.
