I was driving along the information superhighway the other day when I decided to go visit Spoilt Victorian Child, one of my favorite mp3 blogs out there. I saw that they had posted a track (look here) from the incredible free jazz saxaphonist Peter Brotzmann. This prompted me to realize that, for whatever reason, I haven’t really given much space to improvisational free jazz on my own site. I feel that I cover the psychedelics, the indies, the souls and funks pretty well. But for some reason, free jazz has been given the short shrift. Well, I’m here to say that things are gonna be different. Well, it’s not gonna be all free jazz, all the time, but I’ll definitely be posting more of it.
So, I’ve decided to post some tracks by the most magnificently named group, The Thing. This group was formed in 2000 and plays modern garage rock covers, classic free jazz covers and some of their own inspired compositions. But really, all you’ve got to know is that they play some of the best high energy fire music out there. With Mats Gustafsson, a player who rivals Peter Brotzmann for high energy playing, on saxophone and the power rhythm section of Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums, this trio rules the school.
