Cat Power, aka Chan Marshall has a voice that can break your heart. It’s a voice filled with intimacy, longing, sadness and heartache. She’s been writing and releasing music for almost a decade now, and it’s amazing that she’s lasted this long.
Not because her music isn’t good, in fact it’s quite good, (great, even) but because she also seems to be plagued with some intense stage fright and anxiety. She’s prone to forgetting her own songs and some of her shows have been legendary for the breakdowns that have occured on stage. It boggles my mind that someone with such bad stage fright would still put herself out there time and time again, that she would rise up and face her fears that way.
But her shows aren’t always that way, and when she’s on…she’s on fire. In fact I got to see her in Portland, ME and thought the concert kicked some serious ass. The songs I’ve posted are from a concert back in 1998 that she played with fellows from the Dirty Three (Jim White) and the Lynnfield Pioneers (Mark Moore) and is truly transcendental.
