Yo La Tengo

Yo La Tengo have been rocking stages left and right for over 20 years now. It’s amazing that they’ve been at this indie-rock game for so long and are still at the front of the pack. They’re an amazingly versatile band that does everthing from noise rock to delicate pop to free jazz romps. Honestly, if you’ve never heard of this band or are new to the indie genre, then Yo La Tengo are a required listen. Almost everything they’ve done is essential, but definitely check out Painful or Electr-o-pura both on Matador Records.

For the past ten years, they’ve also been active participants in the WFMU pledge drive, with the premise of their portion of the show being that pledges of 50 dollars or more entitles you to request any song for the band to sing. It’s always a great show filled with messy and raucous cover songs. The songs I’ve chosen are from one segment of the show, about 50 minutes in, and present songs from (in order) Paul McCartney & Wings > The Stooges > Talking Heads > Paul Simon > The Rolling Stones > The Who.

[...] Despite my obvious penchant for all things noisy and psychedelic, sometimes I like to kick back and do some soft-rockin’ to the old indie standards. And when those urges hit, I usually turn to this band, Yo La Tengo (look here). Together since the early ’80’s, the band only really started to come together in the early ’90’s with the release of this album, Painful. [...]

[...] There must be something totally liberating about lo-fi four-track recordings that causes musicians to come back to it, again and again. James McNew is a perfect example. As bassist for Yo La Tengo (look here and here), he already has an outlet for his musical demons and decent studios to work in and yet, he still breaks out the ole four-track and gives it a while every once in awhile as Dump (look here).
