joe meek's girls

and so we arrive at our last post on this joe meek odessey. the first post dealt with his instrumental tracks. the second post dealt with his male vocalists. and on this post? we’re gonna talk about joe meek’s girls. i really think that joe meek did some of his best production work when using female vocalists because not only was he able to find singers with just the right combination of innocense and experience, he was able to translate that onto tape very effectively.

as evidence of my feelings, i present to you four different performers that joe meek worked with. pamela blue was discovered by screaming lord sutch, who decided to introduce her to joe meek. i’m glad screaming lord sutch knew a good thing when he heard it. because pamela blue sings her heart out on the incredibly sad love song, my friend bobby. next, we’ve got flip singing mama didn’t live. i really don’t know too much about her, but i wish i did. her rendition of this song is just fantastic. jenny moss was in television before trying her hand at singing. apparently, she played jailbait love interest in coronation. and finally we come to glenda collins who is widely considered to be the strongest female singer that joe meek worked with. i think that’s definitely evident in her song i lost my heart at the fairground. her strong vocal stylings are wonderfully complemented by joe meeks production work complete with fairground samples, angelic choir and marching beats.

An excellent series of posts, both in the music chosen and the informative prose.
