we interupt this program…

well, i was surfing the inter-web when i visited the pages of one of my favorite record label/mail order company, bomp records, where i found out that greg shaw died. greg was a true pioneer in the indie scene. as the owner of bomp records, he introduced many to the wonderful sounds of the garage/psych rockers. both through his mail order company as well as releasing records/compilations of those bands.

it was also through bomp records that i found out about one of my favorite bands, the brian jonestown massacre. one of the best shows i’ve ever seen was this band at an instore performance in minnesota. they were ferocious. they threw themselves into the performance with an abandon that i’d never before seen. and never seen since.
A loose cannon known to brawl with bouncers, bandmates and even the occasional audience member, Anton Alfred Newcombe has been 86′d from his share of music venues over the years. He’s blown off sound checks to get drunk and stormed off stages after playing only two songs. He’s provoked hostile crowds by saying things like “Your city sucks” or “Sorry we made you guys wait for two hours, but we were backstage playing Boggle.” Once, he even aimed a .22 rifle at his ex-manager, David Deresinski, who called the contentious troubadour a “stinky Hitler” for urinating on an expensive leather jacket. But despite his often maddening behavior, Newcombe, the highly prolific songwriter and creative force behind the Brian Jonestown Massacre, somehow manages to keep a band together, rotating members like some endless string of battered lab partners.
at any rate. i was gonna post some mp3’s of theirs until i realized that they have their entire catalogue online. so check ‘em out here, then go out and support them.

Oi, keep serving up those sly and the family stone. That shit is hot.
And by the way, I was not fond of the theatrical ending of 28 Days Later either. There was a much more bleaker ending they wanted, but didn’t use. It’s on the DVD
